Staying Close to Grandkids Who Live Far Away
Simple, low-tech and video-call ideas for staying connected with grandchildren across the miles.

Distance doesn't have to mean drifting apart. Small, regular contact matters more than big gestures.
Ideas that work
- A regular call time (for example, Sunday after lunch) gives everyone something to look forward to.
- A shared book: each of you reads a chapter, then talk about it on the call.
- Postcards with a question, like "What made you laugh this week?", that they can answer next time.
- Play games over video: tic-tac-toe on paper held up to the camera, Twenty Questions, or Bingo.
- Cook together on a call: the same simple recipe in two kitchens.
- Share stories from when you were their age.
Keep the tech simple
Use whatever the family already uses (FaceTime, WhatsApp, or Zoom). Ask a grandchild to show you one new feature each call. They usually love being the teacher.
