You don't need a complicated diet. Small, steady habits go a long way.

If you have diabetes, kidney disease, heart conditions, or take medicines affected by food, talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian before changing how you eat.

Five simple habits

  1. Use the half-plate rule. Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit (USDA MyPlate).
  2. Include protein at each meal: eggs, beans, fish, poultry, yogurt, or tofu.
  3. Drink water through the day. The feeling of thirst can fade with age, so don't wait to feel thirsty.
  4. Watch sodium and added sugar. Flavor food with herbs, spices, and lemon.
  5. Make cooking easier: cook once and eat twice, keep frozen vegetables on hand, and share meals with friends.

Easy meal ideas

  • Oatmeal with berries and walnuts
  • Bean and vegetable soup
  • Sheet-pan salmon and vegetables
  • Yogurt with fruit for a snack
