Downsizing is practical work, but it's also emotional. Going slowly and having a plan helps.

Step by step

  1. Start early. Give yourself months, not weeks, if you can.
  2. Begin with easy spaces, like the linen closet or garage, and leave photos and keepsakes for later.
  3. Use four piles: Keep, Give to family, Donate or sell, Toss or recycle.
  4. Ask family first what they actually want. Don't assume.
  5. Measure your new home and bring only what fits and what you use.
  6. Photograph sentimental items before you let them go, and write down the stories.

Paperwork

Keep wills, deeds, titles, insurance, and medical records together, and tell a trusted person where they are. Shred old statements that show account numbers. For questions about how long to keep tax records, see the IRS guidance or ask a tax professional.
